Building a Leadership Team for Global Organisations

Nearmap captures and sells aerial imagery. They experienced rapid growth from 40 to 350 people over a 2.5 year period, and the business was growing faster than the leadership capability in the business. As a result they needed to develop “the next level” of leaders outside the CEO’s leadership team. They identified 40 leaders across all parts of the business in Australia and North America for a program we had the privilege of designing and delivering.

Our Role

10,000 HOURS had been delivering facilitation services to the CEO and his leadership team for 3 years prior to the leadership program. We were engaged by the CEO and CHRO to design and deliver a full-year program across 4 cohorts of leaders, which also involved helping them think about who should be included in the program and the application process. We then designed and delivered a program that included comment and discussion from the C-level leaders in each full day workshop; along with 90-minute Learning Pods; and a digital overlay to communicate program logistics, relevant readings and activities.

For the first time in March 2020, Nearmap ran its strategic planning process with its brand new Extended Leadership Team. This team was created as a result of the leadership capability built from this program. The CEO now had a wider and more sophisticated group with whom to make strategic choices and have discussion. He credits the leadership program with building the enterprise thinking, their group awareness, and their ability to appreciate the complex nature of the work displaying more tolerance and dexterity with uncertainty. The need for external lateral hires into senior roles has dropped and graduates of our program are being elevated into larger and growing roles where previously an external recruitment would have occurred.
