Mastery

Novelty

Do things differently. Play.

The 10,000 hour rule.

10,000 hours is how long it takes to become a master of a craft. Described by academic K Anders Ericsson in 1993, but later made famous by Malcolm Gladwell in his popular 2011 book Outliers, the concept caught our collective fascination.

The number is neat. But the content of the hours is the most important bit. Deliberate practice is what must occur during those hours for the mastery-level skill to be acquired. Deliberate practice is working at the edge of competence.

This kind of practice is effortful and usually involves a large amount of error. If we can stay in the discomfort of this work we will steadily acquire more skill. And if we can do that for 2-3 hours a day, 6-7 days a week we will amass 1,000 hours in a year and eventually, 10,000 hours. This period is often described as the “decade apprenticeship” or “silent decade” before new talents break out in the field.

What drives us

Cultivating Supportive Environments for Growth.

We are driven to help. Whether we are helping a participant to better articulate themselves, or two people to better understand each other, or a team to better debate and decide, or hundreds of conference attendees to better engage in the content - we love to help. We deeply respect our client context and enjoy celebrating their success. We also enjoy celebrating as a team, be it a birthday, a product development milestone or a client win.

Success isn't just about innate talent; it's about seizing opportunities and putting in the hard work. At 10,000 Hours we create a culture of empowerment, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.

What if facilitation was a true profession? What if there was a Royal College of Facilitation with mandatory educational standards, supervision, continuing professional development and the power to sanction. At 10,000 Hours we act as if that is true. We work to elevate the field of facilitation with every workshop we run. We take our craft seriously. We work with writers and thinkers in our field to advance our practice and elevate the solutions we provide our clients. There is no finish line, just an ongoing professional enquiry into our work.

When we started we wanted to build a business that could have a Christmas party. A team of people that enjoyed each others’ company and wanted to be together. Done well we would attract great people and they would attract great clients. These two forces working together provide a virtuous cycle of growth and development for our team, for our clients and our firm.
